Den 617 km långa järnvägen från Dunhuang till Golmud består av två delar: en befintlig del av Qinghai – Tibet-järnvägen från Golmud till Yinmaxia station och en nybyggd 509 km (316 mi) enkelspårig elektrifierad järnvägslinje som förbinder Yinmaxia station till Dunhuang, följer en rutt som liknar den med China National Highway 215 .
